EVALUATION QUESTION 3: FEEDBACK

EVALUATION QUESTION 3: FEEDBACK

Firstly, Kermode notes that Indie films have ways of securing distribution nowadays through alternative means. Our film is based on a small scale, independent production and it is therefore unlikely to have a standard theatrical release. However, Kermode says that many platforms are used to compensate for no traditional cinema release. For example, Netflix released Beasts Of The Nation and Netflix was the provisional tool for its release. Furthermore, smaller productions, such as ours use social media networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

The film website was one of my tasks and this is important in attracting audiences. They give the audience exclusive content and more information about the film. I also created character bios, which I learnt about from looking at the film website of Taken. I leant that these character bios provide a clear biography of the characters and their personal qualities and their purpose in the film without spoiling the film. I made this biography exclusively on my website so that my audience can go and access the website, giving them more content and keeping them interested in this form. In terms of viewing the short film and trailers, Youtube and Vimeo are two of many other platforms that are perfect for audience viewership as Youtube and Vimeo are used daily with a sixth of the population using these platforms. For example, Magnolia and IFC release films on most platforms simultaneously, but they are limited on a number of theatres they can book their films and the technical ability is lacking to release films simultaneously.

This is the path my group and I are going to take, releasing the film on various platforms as it gives room for flexibility for the audience to view our product at home, the cinema or any other place of comfort. In the Guardian article, Kermode emphasises that this is going to be a re-occurring theme in the future and this creates synergy, offering access to online platforms and social media networks, giving the audience the best experience possible for viewing our product.

·         For my evaluation question, feedback for my poster and film trailer was essential so I can then assess and act upon the outcome received.

·         So far I have received feedback for my film poster, where I gained positive feedback and constructive criticism. This allowed me to make improvements.

·         During the process of producing our film, we documented and carefully looked at the feedback that was given to us, so that we could make changes as we wanted our film trailer to be as compelling and exciting as possible.

·        The real idea behind receiving feedback is to get an honest opinion from somebody who is from our target audience. We are addressing the film trailer to the selected target audience and getting opinions from our selected audience to see whether we have drawn the public towards our product successfully and whether we have fully addressed the codes and conventions of the film trailer.

                   POSITIVE FEEDBACK:

We were praised for the custody scene as it looked very convincing. After this shot, it shows a black and white grainy quality, which is viewed from the perspective of a surveillance camera. The camera also displayed the date and time. These effects were praised because of our sharp editing use.

We also gained positive feedback for our very fast paced hard cuts. Along with this compliment, we created a sense of enigma. This shot for example shows the main protagonist pursuing the Ghost unseen wielding a camera, taking photos of him. We also created suspense with the custody scene, zooming into documents where it really creates suspense for the audience.

My group received positive feedback for the beginning sequence showing the high angle establishing shot of London and how authentically real it looked but also for the way we used the text. The text anchored the meaning of the visuals and it carefully explained the scenarios addressed in the film.

  • Praised for editing: Inter titles: How far would you go- 2nd person plural= addressing the audience, questioning them.

  • Praised for sound: Sound bridge- ‘She was acting suspicious’
  • Significant dialogue- ‘Someone’s trying to set me up’
  •  Key info only- good trailer establishes genre.

My group was praised for the very significant sound bridge that was made during the custody scene. For instance, as Aaron is digging through the roots of the situation regarding Sydney’s actions,

CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM:

The criticism that we received was the volume for the sound bridge was too low and the background music was overwhelming. We took this as feedback and we haven't made the changes as of yet.

For the Warehouse scene, we were criticised for the grainy effects. If we had positioned the lighting better, we wouldn't have had a grainy effect in the camera shot and we wouldn't have had to put the ISO so high, this is why the shot looked as grainy as it did.

In the flashback scene, there was criticism made where the filming was done in the wrong angle and the lighting was in the wrong place, hence being difficult to see the character.

FILM POSTER:

I was reminded by my teacher that I need to get feedback for my film poster and to gain feedback concerning areas of inconsistencies that my friends can notice. I think that getting personal feedback is a very good way in order for me to act upon my mistakes and also see whether I have properly addressed the codes and conventions necessary for a professional film poster.

I decided to upload my film poster image on my Facebook page. I did this primarily because lots of my friends use Facebook and I knew that it would draw their attention by appearing on their newsfeed. Furthermore, I wanted to gain feedback concerning whether the quality of the poster is up to par.

I managed to receive a fair share of likes and I also received comments, which were very supportive:

Also, I was met with some constructive criticism, which was very self beneficial for the future when making film posters again. The area of concern was with the fact that two of the three characters were looking at the camera and one of the characters was looking away from the camera. The main concern here was that it seemed a bit random and unclear as to why this was the case. However, it was intentionally done because there have been film posters where they  have had characters looking away from the camera and so I decided to do the same for my poster.

Being given this feedback has definitely boosted my confidence within making film posters. However, I feel that this poster is not perfect and there are a few areas of improvement I can act upon.

One of them is making the background brighter, I think that if I did this, it would really make the characters stand out more and pop out of the poster to really attract the viewers' eyes. Furthermore, I could make the text brighter because I feel that for example, the August 2016 text looks like it is blending in with the background too much. I think that this needs to be more bright so it can stand out more.

MAGAZINE COVER:

After constructing my magazine cover, I decided, like with my film poster, to go on my personal Facebook page to upload my magazine cover in order to get some feedback.

This was the look of my magazine cover before I made additional changes and in following, this was the comments that my friends made and along with their comments, I managed to receive a healthy sum of likes.

However, there was one comment of criticism that I was met with that was constructive and I myself agreed with. This is what the criticism said:

I read this comment and acted upon the pricing of the magazine and the QR code needing to change into a barcode. Below shows the improved version, there is not a lot of difference between the two versions of my magazine cover, but it looks more like a proper magazine cover:

This is the final piece with the barcode put in place and I changed the price of the magazine cover.
