RESEARCH: POSTER CODES AND CONVENTIONS

I analysed the movie poster of The Twilight Saga in order to investigate the genre codes and conventions It gives the information of:

the casting
the costume designer
the music
the music supervisor
the visual effects
the executive producer
the producer
the director
the editor
the production designer
the director of photography
the co-producer

My group and I decided to use the same people's names for the cast and crew.

g
The poster will also require at the bottom the social networks used to promote the film. I created a folder with the social networks logo on one of the apple computers in the media room so when I come to make my poster, I can drag the logos for the social networks onto my indesign poster. This is so the audience can check the social networks to get more information about the film and get exclusive content.  I am currently working on a website for the film, which is where most of the information will be for the film,  which is going to be called www.aquestionofidentity.com and this will be placed at the bottom of the poster.

PLANNING: INDESIGN MOVIE POSTER

On Friday of last week, I was taught how to use a programme called InDesign for when we finalise our ideas and prepare to make our own individual posters. Below shows my experimentation of using the various tools in Indesign to familiarise myself with the software. My group and I are going to make individual posters in InDesign. Having read the last two Examiner's Reports to centres, I am pleased to be using their recommended choice of software in InDesign which is industry standard.

From what I learned with movie posters in general, they all contain the title of the film in large and bold text at the top of the poster, followed by the main characters in the centre frame where most of the attention is displayed. The information of the cast and crew is at the bottom.

I also worked on a word document and I looked at the movie poster of "The Twilight saga" and I looked at the various information it gives. It gives the information of:

the casting
the costume designer
the music
the music supervisor
the visual effects
the executive producer
the producer
the director
the editor
the production designer
the director of photography
the co-producer

My group and I decided to use the same people's names for the cast and crew.

PLANNING: LOCATION RECCE RE-FILMING THE GRAVEYARD SCENE

Last week my group and I decided to re-film the graveyard scene due to technical issues. The idea was to portray the right angles to represent the right emotions in order to engage with the audience. At the scene where I kneel down in front of the gravestone, our primary focus was to use a close up shot which would show this and also start to introduce the main characters in the movie.

This shot was taken by Kate Bradford where we revisited St George's Church Cemetery in Esher, Surrey.  The next stage was to find the right spot to film this scene in order to capture the right feel and concept of the storyline. We came across an area where the stage design fitted correctly with what we were looking for as you can see in the image above. We wanted a deeper meaning with the use of these objects to make the trailer more interesting and have more variety to explore the different camera angles to create the right sense of feeling for our audience.

My group member Kate created a YouTube account to show the process of filming behind the scenes. Below will have a link to her channel.

CONSTRUCTION: THE GHOST AND AARON CONFRONTATION SCENES

Saturday of last week, my group and I filmed some of the remaining scenes that were left to film, such as the fighting scene between the Ghost and Aaron and the gasoline scene, which are the more intense scenes in the film trailer so for us it was going to be challenging yet exciting.

The fighting scene we filmed in Weybridge. We needed to take precautions of other people as it was narrow pathway and we didn't want to draw unnecessary attention. Luckily, it was very discrete and in-between a car park. It was useable throughout the whole day as hardly any people used the alleyway and was a perfect place to film as the lighting was excellent.

We also filmed the gun scene where the Ghost raises the weapon to a migrant's head. This scene fitted well with this location as the small pathway looked very sheltered and hidden. This scene is a breaking point in the trailer to create the sense of sympathy for the migrant as she is innocent and is treated as a sinner. This was a powerful two-person shot showing the emotions of the characters.

On the same day, we also filmed the gasoline scene involving myself who plays Aaron and Jay who plays the Ghost. We decided as a group to film in one of our group member's garage's as it offered the perfect space we needed and was very hidden and gave the eerie and mysterious vibe. In this scene, we see a turn of events of dominance, as Aaron is depicted as vulnerable and unguarded tied to a chair. The ghost circles around Aaron pouring gasoline all around the chair. This scene alone questions the audience as to whether it is a case of the bad guy wins as this scene alone shows complete domination and no chance of escape, again hinting questions to the audience what is going to happen next.

Following on from this scene. We have a blackout, followed by a strike of a match with the camera zooming in. This hypes the fear factor in the trailer and is trying to make the audience feel uneasy as Aaron is in grave danger. This will leave a imprint for the audience and will riddle them with questions which are will Aaron be able to escape the clutches of the ghost.

RESEARCH: CALL SHEET NO 8

Kate Bradford was set the task to create the eighth call sheet. She has devised the date of the shoot and with the image of the location from Google maps, and directions to get to the designated area. This call sheet again reminds the whole group to bring the required equipment to the shoot. We also have equipment from the media studies studio. This is an excellent way of organising the group and it is a reminder to make deadlines.

RESEARCH: CALL SHEET NO 7

My group mate Kate Bradford created the seventh call sheet including the dat of the shoot and the location, which is shown on Google maps below. It also contains the cast and crew that will appear in the shoot, including contact details and email addresses. This is a reminder for all of the group to bring in props that are critical for the shoot. Thankfully, we used some high tech equipment from my media studies classroom, which is extremely helpful when we film around the school area.

PLANNING: CALL SHEET NO 6

My group and I created the sixth call sheet for the film trailer. The scenes that are relevant to this call sheet are going to be filmed in London. Demi and her brother Jay, who is playing the Ghost are the people that are going to be involved in this scene. This scene involves a time lapse of the London eye, which Demi is going to sort out as in her expertise. She is a skilled photographer and editor and combining these two qualities will be very beneficial for this scene.

PLANNING: CALL SHEET NO 5

Above is the fifth call sheet devised from my group and I. This is the call sheet for the filming that we are going to do on the weekend. I shall remind myself to check this call sheet to ensure that I bring everything that is required of me as this is very important to make sure that everything is brought.

PLANNING: CALL SHEET NO 4

My group and I together devised the fourth call sheet. Like the first call sheet. Sophie and Kate liaised with the group about what is needed in this call sheet and Demi and myself passed on crucial information regarding contact details and email addresses. Google maps again was a must for this call sheet to give a clear birds eye view of the location, with information about the location to be more precise.

This scene was filmed during the school day and all the equipment was available at school which was a breeze for this day of filming.

PLANNING: CALL SHEET NO 3

This is the third call sheet for our film production. This time, it is very similar to the first call sheet in terms of information.

This call sheet is for the latest bit of filming that we are going to do this weekend. This set of scenes involve only myself and Jay, who is portraying the ghost.

This scene is going to be shown near the end of the trailer and is one of the major scenes, which is filled with tension.

Again the call sheets were made my Kate Bradford, my group friend and the rest of us equally contributed to suggestions and each character is to make sure that we each bring our own equipment and clothing.

RESEARCH: MOVIE POSTER ANALYSIS

  • Google research- IMDB
  • We know our genre is drama
  • Les Miserables
  • Looking for posters blended with several images to give more of an idea to the audience what the film is going to be about.
  • Bronson movie poster
  • (scream movie poster) we are looking of a grungy look to show the main victims and the attacker.
  • Perhaps the X men movie poster.
  • The hunger games face poster, or the face to face poster.
  • (American hustle) our movie has passed the test, all men and women are equal. there is the ghost and Chris.
  • Bechdel test.
  • Real steel.
  • The incredible Hulk Bruce banner and hulk poster together.
  • Alex cross movie
I have been set the task to critically analyse different movie posters and how they give audiences more of an idea on what the film is all about.

My group and I are looking for posters blended with several images of important characters to give the audiences more of an idea about the film. We would like something that shows the main victims and the attacker on the poster. The biggest inspiration for our movie poster idea is the movie poster of "Scream" which is displayed below:

This poster " Scream" shows the main victims in the film and this is what we would like in our film poster. Also, the poster cleverly shows that the characters are shown in different sizes and to me, this suggests the importance of each of the these characters, some more than others. I believe that if we follow this structure in our movie poster, it will help the audience understand the different characters and how significant each character is going to be in the film.

DEFINITION:

I looked up the definition of movie poster to lean and understand what the true meaning of a movie poster to help dictate in my own interpretation why we have layered out our movie poster the way we did. Here is the definition: "A movie poster is a poster used to advertise a film. Studios often print several posters that vary in size and content for various domestic and international markets. They normally contain an image with text. Today's posters often feature photographs of the main actors".

PLANNING: CALL SHEET NO 2

My group and I have made a total of six call sheets, this is the second one we have made and there is a massive amount of information compared to the first one our group made. (I shall continue this blog post in due course.)

This call sheet is referencing from the scenes that we filmed during the half term in October. Again from the previous call sheet, it shows the contact details from the cast and crew, this time there are more actors, therefore there are more details on display.

This time round we needed to take extra care in ensuring that we had the right equipment and wearing the right attire because we did most of the filming during this time and there are a lot more people involved in the scenes.

PLANNING: CALL SHEET NO 1

My group and I devised our first call sheet. Sophie and Kate started our group off with what is crucial for the call sheet and me and Demi equally contributed to passing on information, concerning people's contact details and email addresses etc. To give a clear visual of where we are going to film, we included a map from google maps giving a clear bird's eye view of the location.

I think that not only are call sheets useful to give the viewers a clearer idea of what each scene is going to consist of, but it gives the whole group a reminder of what is required for the day of filming such as equipment and costumes, which is crucial. Below is the call sheet:

The actual call sheet was made by Kate Bradford with input of the three other members.

RESEARCH: THREE DESIGN LAYOUTS

I AM GOING TO PRESENT THIS BLOG ON A EMAZE PRESENTATIONAL TOOL IN DUE COURSE.

RESEARCH: IDENT

Today in our lesson, my group and I were searching on the internet looking at different programmes that could be beneficial for our film trailer. We are deeply considering using IStopMotion, as we are very familiar with the programme. However, we are more lenient to use a animation programme. The main reason for this is because we wan to experiment with out capabilities and make a product that is primarily made due to our perseverance and eagerness to learn more about media tools.

Below shows some of the websites that I have visited:

PLANNING: MY GROUP TREATMENT

It’s 2015. AARON JONES, a twenty-one year old and SYNDEY JONES, a seventeen year old brother and sister live together after their parents were involved in a tragic accident when SYNDEY and AARON were youngsters. As a result of their death, SYNEY and AARON developed- a closer relationship.

SYDNEY, while still at school, starts to get involved with selling illegal passports in order to earn extra money. AARON notices his sister's lifestyle change such as her prolific spending and extravagant clothing. SYDNEY, one day, goes to complete a deal selling illegal passports to helpless, naïve and desperate refugees seeking asylum in Great Britain.

A husband, wife and baby refugee trio are desperate to seek salvation in the United Kingdom travelling afar to a receive a forged passport from SYDNEY and THE GHOST, her calculative, wealthy criminal businessman. THE GHOST is aggravated by SYDNEY bringing the refugees to the main warehouse where illegal passports and identification cards are being manufactured and distributed. THE GHOST reacts with force and violence hitting SYDNEY with a heavy, rough ceramic brick shouting, "How dare you! You could have comprised the whole operation! I am not a charity case!".

Evidence found by the police shows that AARON was associated with her death. AARON's objective is to right the wrong of the false accusation. He has been labeled as the culprit for his sister's death. He branches out the many ways to capture the real killer. He spreads out the death reports of SYDNEY, scrutinizing every detail to unveil the trail to lead him to the killer.

As AARON tries to solve the mystery of who killed his sister, and why she has been so violently murdered; AARON seeks advice from every person who has had involvement in her life. AARON tracks SYDNEY's steps prior to her death such as her bank account, Facebook, her phone and Twitter for her location, association with friends and extravagant spending. He seeks to try and find out as much information he can about SYDNEY's killer and ways in which he can avenge her death by aiming to meet with her killer.

This treatment was mostly devised by my group mate Kate Bradford. I made some suggestions to this task and wrote a couple of paragraphs in rough for Kate to grab some ideas. I felt that the end result was very promising and I feel that we worked well together.

PLANNING: INTER TITLES:

In class this week, my group and I needed to consider the inter titles that is going to be used in our film trailer. These are quite important because the inter titles help carry the story thought the trailer and they are especially used to question the audience and make them use their logic to speculate what is going to happen in the story.

Below shows the inter title that I suggested, my group mates thought that this was a good idea, however, it comes across as too strong and it would mostly be associated with a horror film genre rather than the product we are producing.

Furthermore,

PLANNING: LOCATION RECCE FOR CUSTODY SCENE

This Monday, My group and I needed to consider where would be the best suited location to film the custody scene. Also, this scene is important in terms of the storyline and gives the audience a deeper thesis to the origins of the occurrence throughout the film trailer. We needed something that looked authentic and we needed to have dim lighting in the room so that it shows off the authenticity we wanted to achieve. Our group came up with a suggestion that in our school main building, there is a room called 'Clive's Bath'. Below is a picture that my friend and group mate Demi took:

From what we saw when we entered the room, as a whole, we knew straight away that this was the most suitable place to film our custody scene. We brought some additional lighting equipment with us  in case we needed a close up shot of the character's face with the lamp right next to their face. I noticed that with scenes such as this, sometimes they do tend to have a lamp pointed right at their face to give the suspense feel to the scene.

PLANNING: SOUNDATION MUSIC STUDIOS

As my group need to consider the boundaries of copyrighted music, I decided to snoop around the internet to find any websites that allows you to construct music in your own interpretations and make your own music from the ground up.

I came across this interesting website and I have signed up for a free account which allows me to experiment with sounds and incorporate sounds to my liking. Although early in the process, I have been playing around with some of the sounds to see what I could come up with: below I will show some screenshots of the website and the editing process of music making with a hyperlink.

This is the area of where you can make your own music above. It allows you to change the audio channel, change pitch, very reminiscent to a professional music making website which I shall liaise with my peers further about.

Furthermore, The beauty that I find with this website, if we wish to pursue this idea, is that we are stress free in terms of copyright claims because the music is set to default for anybody to use and is not linked to any professional musician. This allows for flexibility and With my previous blog post about music inspiration, I can consider the ideas in my previous post and implement the ideas into out own creation. Here are the links to the website:

PLANNING: TRELLO UPDATE:

RESEARCH: THE INTERTILES AND THE CREDITS

On Monday morning, me and my group were discussing what inter titles would be best suited for our film trailer.

In order for me to get a better understanding of the concept inter titles and credits, I googled the definition of Inter-titles first and this was the result that I got:

INTERTITLE: An intertitle is a piece of filmed, printed text in the middle of the photographed action at various points. Inter titles used to convey character dialogue are referred to as "dialogue inter titles", and those used to provide related descriptive/narrative material are referred to as "expository inter titles".

These were the results that I got when I searched inter titles on google images:

Moreover, i looked at the definition for credits in a film title and this is the definition I got:

CREDITS: There are two types of credits, opening credits and closing credits.

OPENING CREDITS: Opening credits are shown at the beginning of a show and list the most important members of the production. they are usually shown as text superimposed on a blank screen or static pictures, or sometimes on top of action in the show.

CLOSING CREDITS: Closing credits are shown at the end of a show and list all the cast and the crew of the production.

PLANNING: DETECTIVE GIBBS' COSTUME:

This character is the person who interviews Aaron, who is claimed to be responsible for the death of Sydney Jones.

Sophie was the person who played this character. she wore black tights, a black blazer and black shoes. All of her clothing was in black.

We were also considering her wearing a police hat, however, we decided as a group not to go through with the hat because we didn't think it fitted the character and also, We thought that it didn't look particularly serious for the role.

Below is a picture that my friend and group mate Demi took to show her in character:

Demi took this photo of her with the hat on because we wanted to experiment with what her finalised look should be. I was glad that we did this, although it is only experimental, it made us decide fairly quickly how she should look.

RESEARCH: FILM TITLE SURVEY

On Monday's lesson, I was set the task to do a survey on what film title best suits our film idea. I decided to jot down on a piece of paper the results of the survey. Below shows the results of the survey:

CONSEQUENCE OF IDENTITY: 1
A QUESTION OF IDENTITY: 11

There is a long margin of a result and for me, I felt the same way.

Thursday 5 November 2015

PLANNING: THE REFUGEES COSTUME:

My group decided that we should stick to basics with the refugees' attire. We went for a plain jumper with a long skirt and a Hijab around her head. This was to achieve our goal of her looking as authentic as possible. Below will show you the refugee herself in character:

Typical Refugees wear plain clothing with a long skirt and dress as researched by my group member Sophie.

Kate while during filming also wore a scarf and a Hijab, which is not shown in this blog post unfortunately. This was only captured in the filming. Kate's refugee is shown to be vulnerable, however cautious as she holds a baby in her hands. Before her scene, there is going to be a time lapse shown of the London Eye, which illustrates to the audience that the refugees only salvation is moving out of their native land to the UK and to breathe new air into their lives.

We also had a male refugee named Omar, who was also to follow the clothing of simplicity. He wore jacket, jeans and a top. Below this text I simply googled a typical male refugee and these were the results that I got:

My group and I drew inspiration from these images and introduced our male refugee in our own version as we thought it would be more creative to do so.

PLANNING: MUSIC INSPIRATION FOR THE FILM TRAILER:

For our film trailer, Music is a very important element to any film trailer as it alleviates the mood that the trailer is trying to address to the audience. it is also a powerful element for all kinds of genres for films and film trailers because it makes the audience feel excited and at the edge of their seat. I decided to do some searching for any ideas for our film trailer that links in with the theme of the trailer and also keeps the audience drawn in.

I searched into YouTube "BOOM Library." They have a YouTube channel and a website which consists of cinematic trailer sound effects. I will place the link to the YouTube video HERE.

I have also looked at "Secession Studios" website which consists of different variants of cinematic trailer sound effects. It also gives you a insight of their personal background and how they came around which I personally found to be of interest. I will place the link to the website HERE.

I also searched their YouTube channel which I have subscribed to, and This video in particular is the most relevant to our group, as the views of nearly 5 in a half million speaks for itself. This video definitely sets the scale of our musical needs in this trailer and I shall place the link to this video HERE

However, I think we have found the winning ticket for our film trailer. A song called "Ash" by the succession is a very dramatic song with orchestral music which is a perfect mix of dramatic elements and slow and monotone elements. I shall place the link to the song on YouTube HERE.

Also, I will need to email these people if we are going through with this piece of music for copyright reasons. I shall liaise with my peers about the matter.

RESEARCH: THE BOY FILM TRAILER

For the film trailer itself, I thought it would be a good idea to gain some ideas on how professionals structure a film trailer critically, so that my group and I can replicate their footsteps into producing a successful film project. I grasped some ideas from a upcoming horror film called 'The Boy' directed by William Brent Bell and written by Stacey Menear. The chilling concept is about a British couple who hire a young American nanny to care for their son, who turns out to be a 8 year-old real life sized doll.

This may not correlate to out genre of film, but I was deeply drawn by the trailer as it contains a series of inexplicable and thrilling events and our has hints of horror with out protagonist of the film, as he mourns for the loss of his sister.

The opening of the film trailer consists of very monotone digetic sound, which in my opinion, creates subtle drama and enigma as we see the protagonist of the film slowly come out of the car being very cautious of her whereabouts. We then have a short snippet of a old woman peering through the window of a mysterious 1890's style house. These dramatic sounds and camera angles can set the scene for our film trailer and could be a good example for our group to establish.

Below is the official trailer for "The Boy"

THE BOY OFFICIAL TRAILER

PLANNING: SYDNEY'S COSTUME

As a group, we needed to consider what individual character was going to wear as each character has their own significance and importance in the trailer, physically as well as emotionally.  Sydney, as her main scene in the trailer shows her going out for a evening outing, we all came to a conclusion that she would be wearing a dress with heels in the colour black, as black is symbolic of darkness and evil and this theme is carried throughout the trailer. Below is a image to display her dress:

Sydney is involved in a big operation, selling illegal passports to refugees and as result gains a large sum of money. This is the reason for her voice of clothing and there is a scene showing her dropping shopping bags containing valuables that any girl would dream of having.

Monday 2 November 2015

PLANNING: AARON'S COSTUME

Our group equally contributed about ideally what myself, the protagonist of the film should wear. We also considered that in the narrative of the film, certain scenes in the film trailer are set in different days, so we needed to rotate my attire because it wouldn't be realistic if I wore the same clothing throughout the trailer.

For the cemetery scene, the car park scene, documents scene and the scene with Aaron and Sydney, I wore a hooded leather jacket with a patterned blue/white top with black chinos. We went for a powerful yet casual look because It correlates week with the characters personality as he is shown to be a powerful character with a solid build and mind, looking for revenge consistently throughout the film.

In the warehouse scene, I am wearing a long trench coat with a black top with white chinos. Again, this sets the standard of an assertive look. I removed the trench coat in the encounter scene with Chris, a important character in the story because we were filming inside Demi's house.

PINTEREST AARON'S LOOK

From the pictures that I pinned on my pinterest account, I felt that the clothing of choice depicted looks to be appealing, but also fits like a glove for my character. Furthermore, the theme of the film is very

CONSTRUCTION: FILMING AT MY HOUSE

On the 19th October, Demi, Sophie and I filmed at Woking town leisure centre and we started by filming at the shopping town centre. The majority of the shots taken were of myself running across the car park and we also took some different angles of myself running up the stairs to heighten the drama. Below you will see some of the photos that I took on my iPhone, whilst the other photos were taken from Demi:

PLANNING: THE WAREHOUSE

These pictures below were taken from my iPhone showing where we filmed for the warehouse scene. We were given permission to use this house at Kingston upon Thames.

My group and I were extremely grateful to be given the opportunity to film in this area as I feel that it looks very authentic and has exceeded our expectation for filming areas.

PLANNING: FILMING AT THE GRAVEYARD AT ESHER CEMETRY

Kate and I travelled to St George's church in Esher, Surrey to arrive there to film and structure out one of the more revealing scenes in the film trailer. One of the shots that was included in this scene was a establishing shot of the cemetery. whilst it has beauty surrounding the area, objects such as the head stone and the natural and mundane colouring rears its ugly head with eerie, and intimidating vibes throughout the trailer. We also show a close up reaction shot of my face, which shows a strong emotive and will make the audience sympathise with he character. It also shows his vulnerable side which links in with the monotone atmosphere which the audience can sense. The enigma raised here will draw the audience in because people do not want questions unanswered.

Below you will be able to see some of the pictures that me and Kate captured:

Kate and I decided that it would be a good idea to experiment with different camera angles and also to tweak each scene to see which scene suits in our favour. We also wanted to ensure that each shot we took had a deeper meaning as well as what we visually perceive so that the audience can relate to each scene. The following ideas that me and Kate came up with were as follows:

  1. A planning, close up shot of myself sitting on a bench in the cemetery with my face contorted with emotion and really highlighting my character's vulnerability and morality seeped out of my character.
  2. A tracking shot of myself opening the cemetery gate and walking towards the grave of the deceased sister.
  3. A point of view shot of myself opening the gate and re enacting the previous point in my perspective.
  4. Finally, a panoramic, panning shot of the graveyard showing the church and the grave stone as well.
